On a quaint New York City corner at Queens Boulevard and 54th Avenue, stands the oldest church in Queens, the First Presbyterian Church of Newtown (FPCN). Founded in 1652, the church has been serving the local community for more than three hundred and fifty years. Most recently, with an eye to the astronomical rise in hunger and hunger-related issues in the borough of Queens, FPCN has started the Greens for Queens Urban Farm. Since 2003, the Farm, located on church property, has been dedicated to growing organic produce to be donated to local food banks. The project is directed by its founder, Mary Shutak-Jenkins, wife of FPCN’s pastor, the Rev. Stanley Jenkins, and runs successfully with help from volunteers and its numerous partner organizations, including Green Guerillas and South Asian Youth Action (SAYA!), a local youth organization. For further information, or if you would like to make a donation, please contact Mary Shutak-Jenkins at: (718) 779-6628, or the church office at (718) 639-3126.
